COMMENT: Regional Illusion and Its Aftermath

Events since 1997 have exposed the engagement orthodoxy as wishful thinking. Under its influence, Australian foreign policy came to depict 'Asia' as an all-or-nothing project. The Howard government has broken with this orthodoxy to pursue a more pragmatic, realistic and balanced policy towards the diverse states that comprise what Gareth Evans once termed 'the East Asian hemisphere'. Predictably, this shift has caused dismay and apprehension in some media, academic and official circles.
