In the Statistics NZ migration figures for November 2008, of the 37,500 New Zealand citizens who left the country (permanent long term departures), 35,200 moved to Australia. Why are so many New Zealanders flocking to Australian shores, and what can be done to stop the so-called Kiwi 'brain drain'? What policy reforms would be necessary to entice you home?

Dr Don Turkington, Managing Director of Upland Capital and member of the New Zealand Governments new Regulatory Responsibility taskforce and CIS Board member, considers the problem of antipathy towards aspiration and the importance of a national ‘can do’ attitude in moving New Zealand forward to a better future.
Luke Malpass, CIS Policy Analyst, examines the cultural and mindset differences between Australia and New Zealand which affect productivity and drive, and will use the forum findings as the basis for a research paper.
