We are on the verge of a crisis in public health care.
The single biggest risk to future budgets will be health costs. Unless health care can be made affordable, future generations simply won't be able to fund the escalating cost of public health. Spending on health has doubled over the last 10 years and the NSW Auditor General predicts that health spending will consume the entire NSW budget by 2033.
As the Committee for Economic Development of Australia put it: "Reforms are necessary if Australia is to maintain universal access to the best possible healthcare in the future."
This is not a problem we face alone; the health systems of all western countries face similar existential financial challenges. This special TARGET30 forum will feature a pre-eminent health expert from America discussing what we can do to save our safety net.
Dr John Goodman and Dr Jean Drouin will discuss the experiences of reform in America and propose practical policy solutions that Australian governments should implement to 'bend the cost curve down' and prevent health from bankrupting us all.
CIS Research Fellow Dr Jeremy Sammut will provide expert commentary and discuss the views shared in his recent paper: Saving Medicare but NOT as we know it.
