'Government by the people' or 'government against the people'?  Nobel laureate James Buchanan used these terms to to examine the size of government relative to the economy, which has steadily increased since the beginning of the 20th century in most developed economies, including Australia.

Dr Stephen Kirchner will review some of the theories of government growth and present new evidence about the long-run drivers of big government in Australia since 1901.
