Economists have long argued over the relationship between population growth and living standards. The Malthusian views of most early economists have since given way to a consensus that views population growth as neutral for economic growth. However, a minority of economists, many of whom are classical liberals, have explored the ways in which population growth causes rising living standards. In his Meet the Researchers lecture, CIS Research Fellow Dr. Stephen Kirchner will argue that this perspective changes the way we should think about the costs and benefits of population growth and immigration. In particular, many of the more obvious costs associated with population growth are best viewed as a price we pay to capture the larger, but sometimes less obvious, benefits accruing to a growing population and greater population density.
